How to enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 in Outlook on Windows 7 and 8?

Enabling TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in Outlook on Windows 7 and 8 involves making changes to the system registry. Before proceeding, it’s crucial to understand that modifying the registry can have serious consequences if not done correctly. It’s recommended to back up your registry or create a system restore point before making any changes.

Here are the steps to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in Outlook on Windows 7 and 8:

Enabling TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2:

  • Open the Registry Editor:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to the TLS Settings:
    • Navigate to the following registry key:

mathematica
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols

  • Create TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 Keys:
    • Right-click on the Protocols key, choose New, and then select Key.
    • Create two new keys named TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 under the Protocols key.
  • Create Client Key under TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2:
    • For each of the new keys (TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2), create a subkey named Client.
      • Right-click on TLS 1.1 or TLS 1.2, choose New, and then select Key.
      • Rename the new key to Client.
  • Create DisabledByDefault DWORD Values:
    • For each Client key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value named DisabledByDefault and set its value to 0.
      • Right-click on the Client key, choose New, and then select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
      • Rename the new value to DisabledByDefault.
      • Double-click on DisabledByDefault and set its value data to 0.
  • Create Enabled DWORD Values:
    • For each Client key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value named Enabled and set its value to 1.
      • Right-click on the Client key, choose New, and then select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
      • Rename the new value to Enabled.
      • Double-click on Enabled and set its value data to 1.
  • Restart the Computer:
    • Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Important Notes:

  • Ensure that you are comfortable working with the registry and follow the steps carefully.
  • Creating a system restore point before making changes is recommended.
  • These steps may vary slightly depending on your specific Outlook version and system configuration.

After making these changes, Outlook should be configured to use TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 for secure connections. If you encounter any issues or are unsure about these steps, consider seeking assistance from your IT department or a knowledgeable professional.
